Pathfinder – Not bad

by Optimal Optimus on August 1, 2012

A couple of co-workers wanted to get into some table top RPGing and so we decided to run a Pathfinder Campaign. It’s the first time that I have been part of a Pathfinder Campaign/3.5 Ed game and I must say I am pleased by what the folks at Paizo have done with the license.

Liked

  • Game feels very balanced – DnD 3.5 was at its end a complete mess of rules that broke all over the place. More and More books in a faux arms race of who has the best prestige class munchkin build made the game less cool and turns take 10x longer. Thanks Book of Nine Swords…
  • Gunslingers – hehehe best implementation of fire arms in a table top RPG I have ever seen
  • Golarion great campaign setting easily on par with Forgotten Realms, probably because it doesn’t have as much OP baggage.

Hated

  • Monks can catch bullets automatically no rolls
  • Still more tactical than actual role play
  • Still rules heavy and can detract on-boarding new folks to the game

Overall
Pathfinder is a fantastic game system. Balanced and familiar at the same time. I only wish it was a little better about role playing vs roll playing. But if you are in the mood for a good old fashion dungeon crawl with your homies Pathfinder works.
